Cylex 1. Please tell us a few words about what you do and who ‘Chrysalis Wellbeing’ is.
Chrysalis Wellbeing: Chrissy Ortner BA.DipEdPsych MAACHP founded Chrysalis Wellbeing in 2014, bringing together a range of therapies including Hypnotherapy, Counselling, Massage, Emotional Freedom Technique (Acupressure) and Reiki to treat anxiety, trauma, tension and pain naturally. Her expertise lies in health management; supporting people to quit smoking, let go of anxiety or depression and supporting women through pregnancy and parenting. With over 20 years experience working within Mental Health settings, education, homelessness and aged care settings and a keen interest in natural parenting, she provides both a clinic service in Mt Evelyn and a mobile service in the Yarra Ranges.
Cylex 2. Have you had people that couldn’t go through hypnosis? What do you do in such situations?
Chrysalis Wellbeing: Hypnosis is a trance state that is similar to the ones we experience when daydreaming, watching tv, or driving on autopilot. Hypnotherapy utilizes this relaxed state of mind and body to help us create positive changes in our behaviour and mindset. Most people can easily achieve these relaxed states for effective therapy to occur. Occasionally a client is unable to relax body and or mind sufficiently or extreme exhaustion has meant that they too easily fall asleep in a session. For people experiencing these difficulties, I am able to utilize acupressure and counselling techniques to help them achieve peace of mind and wellbeing. Emotional Freedom Technique incorporates tapping acupressure points on the body and is a process I teach to clients to help them self manage difficult emotions and chronic pain and is even helpful for children experiencing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD
Cylex 3. Does a weak-
Chrysalis Wellbeing: As with all therapeutic approaches, being committed to making positive changes in your own life and willing to try relaxation techniques is an important factor. However, as in the case of quitting smoking and letting go of addictions, hypnotherapy is able to bypass a dependence on willpower alone to break those addictions. In a comparison of over 600 trials of quit smoking techniques, hypnotherapy was found to be 15 times more effective than relying on willpower alone because it addressed many of the underlying causes such as stress, triggers and eliminated cravings.
Cylex 4. Can a person become addicted to hypnosis or is it habit forming?
Chrysalis Wellbeing: Hypnosis is not addictive or habit forming. In all sessions you remain aware and in control and are able to discontinue sessions as you wish.
Cylex 5. What do you treat mostly with Hypnotherapy?
Chrysalis Wellbeing: I treat mostly anxiety and stress related conditions with Hypnotherapy. Many people come to me when medications have proven unsuccessful in managing their conditions and they are wanting to explore natural treatments. I also work with many people wanting to quit smoking who have failed to do so with nicotine replacement or willpower alone. Phobias can also be treated very quickly and effectively with hypnotherapy such as fear of water, fear of flying and fear of spiders.
Cylex 6. What is hypnobirthing? Who is this suitable for?
Chrysalis Wellbeing: Hypnobirthing is a self hypnosis or meditative technique that allows women to remain relaxed and calm throughout the birth process; reducing stress and pain levels and, as a consequence, reducing the rate of medical interventions in delivery. It is taught in small classes and is suitable for all pregnancies and birth settings. I also support women scheduled for Caesarean Section as hypnotherapy has been shown to improve wound healing, milk production and can improve bonding. Hypnobirth classes teach birth partners powerful tools to support the mother throughout labour as well as assisting women with many pre and post natal problems such as back pain and exhaustion. Women using these self hypnosis techniques report experiencing less pain in labour and are able to talk and move as necessary whilst maintaining a sense of inner calm.
Cylex 7. What sort of topics or experiences are suitable for a counselling session?
Chrysalis Wellbeing: Counselling/ Coaching Sessions are extremely useful for people experiencing stress, anxiety, trauma or are feeling overwhelmed in their work or family life. Counselling can support people who are out of work, are experiencing troubling emotions such as grief, guilt, anger or fear or are troubled by intrusive memories or thoughts. Counselling sessions can help you to see the bigger picture, find alternate ways of thinking/behaving, give you strategies for managing stress and help with goal setting.
